In Platte County, they could talk about their potential without exag- geration, but in truth the boom probably began two years ago. Although few may have recognized it at the time, a series of events during the depth of the nation's economic problems actually foreshadowed the current pace of development in Platte County. Passage of a county transportation program, commencement of improvements at KCI and on state highways, and especially plans for several key private developments were under way. Although many may have argued it at the time, the building blocks for significant Platte County growth were in place. The paradox of that is hard to exaggerate. Platte County has for years been spoken of primarily in the future tense. Their golden age was just around the corner--but never seemed to arrive. But with retail developments that include a major destination center scheduled to open next month, new industrial and office construction, Platte County is actually beginning to plan its next steps, not worry about its first. Aspects of this success have been molded by the county's historic and largely rural character. Area leaders often achieve success through old-fashioned dialog and hard work rather than focus groups or poll taking. As its motto suggests, Platte County is increasingly about achieving excellence. And the way it's succeeding will almost certainly lead to more. |
